While Kayaking The Zanskar River
Known as one of the toughest kayaking expeditions of the world, the whitewaters of Zanskar are not for the faint-hearted! Consisting of Class III and IV rapids, whitewater kayaking at Zanskar river is India’s coldest and most difficult kayaking tour and shouldn’t be tried by first-timers.
The combined run of the Tsarap Chu and Zanskar rivers (the Tsarap is a tributary of the Zanskar) is well-known as a “world classic” kayak trip and Zanskar aka the “land of white copper”, is celebrated to be the trip of a lifetime.
The Zanskar gorge, also known as the Grand Canyon of Asia, with walls standing more than 1000 m deep, is located in the lunar-like landscape of western Ladakh, a mountainous desert, peaked at a high altitude of 11,500, that proves to be an extension of Tibet-both, culturally and geographically.
This kayaking trip is actually one of a kind as most of the areas are uninhabited and untouched by civilization, which allows you to get in touch with nature in its purest form.
The trip starts from the Zanskar Valley, where you can spend most of your time floating past the natural beauty, the scenic landscapes, the snow-capped mountain peaks of the Kashmiri Himalayas and picturesque narrow gorges. As 90% of the population are Buddhists, this trip allows you to take in and absorb the local culture of the area, mingle with natives, interact with them at various villages and markets, visit beautiful riverside monasteries, forts and palaces, to the beat of the drum and the fluttering prayer flags that exude vibrancy with their vivid and vivacious colors.
While most of the trip is easy for experienced paddlers, the serene rocky terrains can easily be overcome under the guidance of expert professionals.
The finishing point at the end of trip is at the confluence of Zanskar and Indus by the village of Nimmu.
Whether it is stopping to camp in the late afternoons or enjoying the local delicacies by the river, lazing in the afternoon sun or strolling & exploring the surrounding area, experiencing a spectacular star filled night sky or sitting around a camp fire, listening to ghost stories; you will definitely discover the rich culture and history of the natives in every small element that makes up Ladakh and its beautiful Zanskar river, enabling you to take back memories that will keep you thrilled for a long time to come.
